Before you become utterly fed up with an endless stream of office parties, we thought we’d squeeze one more Rebellion event in for you. The ShropGeek (almost) Christmas party. Hurrah!
Once again, we’ve invited some of the digital industries leading talent from Shropshire and further afield to come along, share skills and present earth-shattering ideas.
The format for the evening will be three headline speakers and time for two five minute lightning talks. There will also be five minutes at the beginning of the evening to give you opportunity to share any news or announcements you have.
So why not join us for some food and drink and maybe even a cocktail or two – it will be (almost) Christmas after all.

Martin is a designer based in Shrewsbury. He’s worked with a diverse set of clients from massive organisations like governments and universities to tiny startups with two employees. By day he works at mySociety, he divides the rest of his time between parenting, DIY, the occasional freelance project, and playing basketball.
In 2012 I worked on a project to redesign the University of Oxford’s website, in this design-focused talk I’ll share what I learned on the project about user experience design, audience profiling, decision making, and balancing the needs of multiple stakeholders while still trying to build a beautiful, easy to use website.
Jessica Rose is a proto-programmer and tech generalist interested in open access to technical education, skills sharing and community learning projects. She’s currently working with Gaza Sky Geeks to help support their communications strategy development. Gaza Sky Geeks is the only startup incubator in the Gaza strip, providing vital outreach to young people in the area. This talk will look at the ways our minds work to undermine ourselves, either through convincing us that we’re less capable than we really are or that we’re smarter than the facts suggest. We’ll see what impostor syndrome and the Dunning- Kruger effect mean for our personal and professional lives as well as what, if anything, we can do about our failures of perception.
Rob is a web designer working within the marketing department at the University of Chester. He is particulary interested in the challenges posed from the rise in mobile devices and the concept of progressive enhancement. When he’s not at work you’ll find him running, cycling or playing computer games.
The University of Chester and Shropshire Council are working in collaboration to develop a new university for Shropshire. In this talk I will discuss the exciting prospect of designing a website for a brand new educational institution. Although the project is still in its infancy, I will cover design considerations that have been made, CMS and information architecture and the challenges that we face as a small in-house webteam.
Code Club Pro is a not-for-profit providing training and resources to primary school teachers.
We train computer science enthusiasts to share their knowledge with local primary school teachers for just 8 hours a year. The new computing curriculum expects primary school teachers to teach coding to children from the age of 5 and only 1 in 6 teachers feel prepared.
Our aim is to share our passion for computer science to ensure teachers are supported, confident and excited about delivering the new curriculum in their classrooms. We’re the child of Code Club, who have taught over 28,000 kids to code through after-school coding clubs.
